DIY: From Simple Maxi Dress to Origami Skirt and Simple Button Pins as Accents

Konnichiwa! It is currently winter break, but it doesn't feel like it because I'm still worried about my grades because they aren't out yet. -______- To distract myself, I am pouring myself into as many DIY projects as possible. I generally keep in mind of all of the things I want to do and then do them during winter and summer breaks. I plan on making a thrift trip soon, so be on the look out for more DIY this season!

Anywho, the first project of the season is the oh-so-cool origami skirt. I was online window shopping yesterday and I found an origami skirt on clearance for $20+shipping. I have been eye-ing it since summer. To be honest, I was considering it, but $20 is a lot to dish out for such a simple skirt. I did not have the heart to buy it for that price, so naturally, I was on a hunt to find a DIY tutorial and I found THIS. This tutorial is sooo incredibly simple and if you are not the sewing type, you can totally use adhesive tape if you like. I, however, did sew the seams because I didn't want to waste my adhesive tape just yet.

Unlike the tutorial, I did not buy fabric from scratch, which I should've done. I went to a couple of fabric stores and the prices were not bueno at alll. My goal was to spend around $5 if possible, and the fabric was beyond that price, so I went home empty-handed. After a thorough search throughout my house for some fabric, I ended up revamping a simple, black maxi dress that I wore a couple of times. I got it at Ecothrift for about $2. Unfortunately, the dress did not supply me with enough fabric, so I was all over the place with the measurements, but behold, it kind of worked out at the end. TIP: use the tutorial measurements because they are on point.

In addition to the skirt, I decided to revamp a newly-old denim jacket that I found in my room. My mother got it for me from a garage sale when I was too busy to go myself. I love the linings on the collar and wrist areas, but unfortunately, the jacket is a size large, so it looks bulky on me. I decided to give it some life by putting on button pins as accents. I added on a couple of pins that I got for FREE from Urban Outfitters and then I went to Joann to buy the bigger pins that I can customize. The designs I used for the pins were meant to be shirt-DIY-projects, but they look pretty cool as button pins. (If you know where the designs are from, then we should be best friends.) It was such a simple change, but the outcome is too cute. Now, I can't stop wearing it. As long as I wear a fitted silhouette underneath the jacket, then I think the bulky outwear isn't too bad.

My ten cents #30: The satisfactory of making a garment is so much sweeter than buying it.

How I Wear It: Falling out of Summa

So...summer is over, and that means the weather is getting a bit colder. Although I am ready for sweater weather, I'm going to miss wearing cute little dresses and crop tops (actually I'm kind of okay with that because I gain some weight and my midriff is nothing to show off), but no fear, FALLing out of summer does not mean the end of summer trends (corny pun, I know, but that's what I'm known for!) I was tagged to blog about how I would transition summer items into fall/winter essentials, and I thought it would be fun because I'm starting to lack inspiration for this blog. Feel free to tag me with ideas because this blog need some spicing.

I'm only listing my favorite summer trends, so I won't be covering everything. This post is def. long enough.

(Oh, apologies for my ill photo quality; camera and I got into an argument...)

Summer--> Fall #1: Overalls/Dungarees
Summer--> Fall #2: Platform Wedges
I totally got into this trend late, but that's because I have a love/hate relationship with rompers and overalls because I would avoid going to the bathroom when I wear them. TMI much? Well, that's the struggle of being a wannabe fashionable chick. With the inconvenience that comes with this garment, I didn't want to spend a whole on it, so I found one at a garage sale (and another one from Ecothrift) for a relatively cheap price. I got this (Gap) one from a garage sale for 50 cents and the bottom wasn't originally shorts; a good pair of scissors did me well. For this transition, I would swap out a crop top, for example, with an oversized sweater or add on a long outerwear (e.g. no name long grey cardigan with white specks that I got from a garage sale for 50 cents) for some warmth.

I am short, so I take any opportunity to look and feel taller; therefore, I was really excited when I found a pair of affordable platform wedges during the beginning of summer. Do you remember the pair of Dolce Vita that I got from Ross for $20 and I couldn't stop talking about them? They are really tricky to pull off during the fall, but with the right attitude, they aren't too bad. I love quirkiness and I understand why this idea is a fashion no-no, but hey, in the wise words of Drake, "YOLO." Yes, I just went there. In my defense, I learned this mentality way before Drake got big. This idea is...*drumrolls* the SOCK+HEELS/WEDGES COMBO. The idea is so bad that it's good. Everybody makes fun of it, but secretly, everyone wants to wear it. Haaaa. I wouldn't just wear it with any pair of socks; it ought to be a pair of knee-high socks!

If I am going for quirkiness, then I might as well go all out. This outfit cannot get any weirder, but it's fun and light.

Summer--> Fall #3: Skater Dresses
I have no idea where this trend came from, but all of a sudden, skater dresses were in. I always thought they were in since they are flattering with an A-line bottom. Luckily, I already own a couple, like this red Forever 21 dress with a criss-cross back that I got for $10, so I felt pretty trendy this summer, but why stop at summer if they are that flattering. I wear dresses all year round, and for the colder days, I would just layer it with a long-sleeve top or jacket like this Forever 21 moto+utility jacket that cost me $22. The price tag is def out of my comfort zone, but the two-in-one deal is too good to pass up since I'm looking for both a moto jacket and a utility jacket. Versatility is thee best. The funny part is that I had no idea this jacket is a two-in-one combo when I ordered it. I thought the moto-looking part was just an accent. I am totaaally digging this jacket for the fall and winter now.

Summer--> Fall #4: Maxi Skirts/ Dresses
Maxi skirts/ dresses were everywhere this summer....but I didn't get this one until this weekend from Forever 21 for less than $7. No fear, I can still wear it in the fall! Maxi anything is flattering because it gives you the illusion of a taller and slimmer figure, so it would be a shame to limit it to one season. It is a great addition to a night out during the fall because it provides enough coverage, so your legs aren't exposed, but it's equally as fun as a bodycon skirt because it has a scandalous slit. All in all, it a win-win situation. Pair it up with some simple black pumps (e.g. black Nine West pumps that I got from a garage sale for $0.50) and you are set for a classy and feminine look.

Summer-->Fall #5: Crop Tops
Summer-->Fall #6: High-Waisted Shorts
Like I mentioned before, with my not so flattering midriff, I am perfectly fine with calling it quits with crop tops this fall, but being the frugal person that I am, any fabric has the potential to get its PPW worked on. For the fall, I like to layer crop tops onto other items like dresses, for example. Also, if you want to add depth to the outfit, simply add a patterned-top underneath the crop top for more pizazz. Here, I layered my Aeropostale crop top that I got for about $7 over a Bebe (?) polka dotted tank that I practically got for free. A lot of crop tops create a feminine silhouette, so I guess I'm not calling it quits just yet. Just layer other items on top of it like this long cardigan that I got for $1 at a garage sale and grab a pumpkin spice latte, and bam, you are oozing with fall-ness.

I have a very unhealthy obsession with high-waisted shorts like this Calvin Klein high-waisted denim shorts that I got from my aunt. None of my mid-rise shorts got any loving this summer (sorrry </3), and that's because high-waisted shorts make me look taller and skinnier. It tucks in my muffin top very well! A long cardigan plus some semi-tall boots (e.g. Mudd laced combat boots from a garage sale that I got with $1) help extenuate your legs even more.

My ten cents #29:  I believe that I've said this before, but no item is meant for one season or even one generation. I cannot emphasize the importance of LAYERING enough. I hate statistics with all my heart, but the combinations you can make with just some items plus replacement can be a lot. (Fun fact: I used this logic to explain one of my stat's hw problems and I got my credit for it.) You've seen me wear the same garments before on this blog, but I don't wear it the same way all the time. Have fun with all them combinations because clothes should be fun.

103113: Transformation Thursday

Happy belated Halloween y'allllll. I sure had a good one by staying in eating jalapenos pretzels and getting my full 8-hours of sleep. That is the life...but for the very first time, I didn't cheat out of the festive holiday with an angel halo or a set of animal ears. I wanted to really dress up like something or someone that I can relate to or give a little tribute to. However, you know me- I'm not the type of person who would buy something just for one use, so I thought I should make a "costume" with the stuff that I already have at home. I was going to go as a member of One Direction, but I dress like that everyday anyways..

I got my ah-ha moment when I was listening to Lorde's album for about 3 days straight..yup, it's that good. I realized that I have a similar fish net-textured top as Lorde from her music video, Tennis Court, and her performances on many radio stations. Lorde tends to wear black dresses, and heeeeey, I have plenty of those. The only thing I changed about the look was the shoes; I switched the creepers (?) for a pair of heels because that's how roll.

You cannot do the "Lorde-look" without a dark shade of lipstick. You can go fierce with a black shade, but if you can't find one or you are not comfortable going all out, I would recommend a dark plum shade.

As for the hair, you can go all curly with your hair down or you can do an updo look by 1) braiding all of your hair on one side and looping it over to the other side of your head (if you have very long hair) just like Jenn Im from Clothesencounters or 2) split your hair in half and make two braids (if you have short hair) and loop them over your head to form the "braided headband."

My favorite part of this whole costume is that I would totally wear this normally. Thank you, Lorde, for showing me how to wear my fish net-textured cardigan because I have been feeling very uninspired lately...
 Bebe fishnet-textured cardigan--Aunt's closet: FREE
H&M black high-low dress--H&M: $10
Macy's knee-high socks--Gift: FREE
Steve Madden strapped heels--Garage Sale: $1
NYC City Duet 2-in-1 Lipcolor, The Penthouse Plums--Target: $2.50
Total: $13.50, Price Per Wear (PPW): ~$4

My ten cents #28: Test your comfort zones and try something new. It's healthy for your creative mind. :)

How I Wear It: Le Face

This post may not be about my OOTDs or frugal finds, but I feel like this post is still relevant to the idea of self-expression because this face is put out in the open each and every day. It's the first front you must pass before getting to know me on a deeper level. It's definitely a hard front to break down because it has been through its fair share of battles. This front is my face.

I have always wanted to blog about this because 1) people are very ignorant about this topic and 2) I think a lot of people can relate to my situation one way or another. I am very sensitive when it comes to talking about my face or even my skin in general, but if someone can get something out of it, then it's well worth the talk.

I have been suffering physically and mentally from acne for 8 years so far, and before then, I had other skin-related issues. I have been on medication of all sorts. I can pretty much recite all of the tropical creams that my insurance covers. I have been made fun of in languages that I don't even understand. I have used a fair share of over-the-counter treatments. Don't even get me started on how much I have spent just to see some progress.

However, all of that is not even the worst part. The worst part is when people talk to you as if you don't own a mirror and think that you don't even try. For one, I own 3 mirrors in my room and my webcam, which I use as a mirror. I am that insecure. In fact, acne was my motivation to dress better to compensate for my ill-looking face. Two, I have been fighting this battle for so long and I've tried all of the tricks in the book. I have been on a lot of different regimes, both modern and traditional ones. Acne is very tricky because for one moment, there would be a lot of progress and the next thing I know, it's back with revenge. Unless you see me everyday, don't talk to me as if you know what's going on with this front that I have.

Like many, I gave up on treating it and I decided to cover it up with a mask of foundation. I only went to one dance out of my high school career and that was my senior ball. For once, I just wanted to look pretty or at least presentable. I asked my parents if I can give foundation a try just for this occasion. I did not want to be dependent on make-up to feel accepted by the public. Unfortunately, my first use of make-up was definitely not my last; sure enough, I was dependent. Foundation was like a girl's best friend. It stopped the awkward ice-breaker of "Oh hey, your acne is really bad. Do you use medication or anything?" I started to feel...I guess, pretty? Well, good things must come to an end and my foundation just couldn't hide the bumps anymore. Applying makeup became a chore, and I just felt miserable.

I then realized that I couldn't just hide the spots and the bumps anymore. I went back to a previous regime, but this time, I'm using it religiously. I even thumb-tacked the instructions on my bathroom walls. I am currently on my second month of Acne.org's cleanser, benzyl peroxide, and moisturizer. I am also using the jojoba oil, which is amaaaaazing, and AHA+, which is not as fun to use...

In addition, I am using my make-up more sparingly; in fact, I haven't applied foundation for about a week because I ran out....but that's besides the point. For the very first time, I feel independent and beautiful despite the weird red marks on my face. Of course there is still some insecurity, but I have learned to respect my own opinions over others. I understand that a lot of people are coming from a good place when they tell me their opinions about my face, but the public have taunted me with their opinions for too long now.

This face is a work in progress and it will never be perfect, but ultimately, this victory is mine.

My ten cents #27: Sometime, most of the time, your opinion about yourself is far more important than those of others because you know yourself better than anybody else. I mean, you have been in that body for how long now...? My point, exactly.

How I Wear It: School T-Shirts (VSA)

Heeeeey there, it has been a while, hasn't it?  I haven't been motivated to take any pictures since my poor NEX-F3 got into an accident and now I can't turn it on. I plan on getting it fixed soon, but as of now, I'm going back to my OG point and shoot. It got the job done originally, so I'm just going to look at it as a little reunion.

Highlight of the day: officially getting my VSA shirt! I love love LOVE the contemporary design of it. Being Buddhist, the homage of the lotus flower made it even more personal. When I was paying for my membership, which came with the shirt, I told my friend that I already have an outfit in mind. Whether she was serious or joking, she told me that I should make a blog post of how I would style it. (If you are reading this, HI SUZIIIIIIE <3) I laughed it off, but she has a good point. How the heck do you wear school t-shirts outside an event that's associated with the org? Being the club junky that I was and still am, this idea is relevant. I definitely want to work on its PPW, and sleeping with it is kind of cheating in my book. I actually get all of my sleepwear for free or really cheap because it not even for show, so I wouldn't invest in a shirt just so I can sleep in it...

Without further to do, here are 3 ways I would wear a school t-shirt or even a graphic band tee. Each outfit is meant for a quarter because you know you want to wear it all year to work on its PPW. ;)

FALL: When I think of fall, I think of layering, especially layering SUMMER CLOTHES into your fall wardrobe (working on that PPW of course). T-shirts instantly make outfits casual. I am not a big fan of casual wear because I like to go the extra mile to look more individualized, but for my lazy days, I like to pair T-shirts with dressy clothes like my black high-low dress from H&M, which cost me $10. As for my shoes, I paired my black Sam Edelman heels that I got from Goodwill for $5 with my gifted knee-high socks to create a casual bottom look as well. I am not a huge fan of the sock plus heels combo, but I like how quirky it looks.

WINTER: I am soooo ready to bring out my coats! I got this brown Forever 21 peacoat before I practiced the "mytencents" principles, so it was relatively expensive; I think it was about $20? I will never make that same mistake again! Anywho, I wanted to go for a sophisticated look with some edge, so I paired the shirt with a Jones New York collared sleeveless top that I got from a garage sale for a dolla, black Bebe denim bottoms that my aunt gave to me, and Mudd laced combat boots that I picked up at a garage sale for a buck.

SUMMER: Ohhh summer, it's going to be awhile until we meet again. What I love and hate about summer is that I can't layer. It's kind of hard to make different outfits when you want to wear a minimal amount of clothes. That is when I rely on accessories to amp up my looks. My very Asian-y mom always remind me to wear a hat during the summer to keep my not-so-light-colored skin from getting any darker. I do not like hats because they add extra weight to my head...if that makes any sense. Being the obedient daughter that I am, I do listen to her by borrowing her hat like this red Nine and Co. straw hat that she got at a rummage sale for $2. :P It does not feel like summer without a pair of high-waisted shorts and boat shoes, so I belted my Calvin and Klein high-waisted denim shorts that I got from my aunt with my maroon Coach belt that I got from a garage sale for $0.50. Lastly,  I sealed the deal with my grey with red accents boat shoes from Nordstrom Rack, which I got for less than $15.

My ten cents #26: Trial and error, baby, trial and error. Try different trends that emphasizes on little accents or make your own! I truly believe in the importance of little details because they make a huge difference! Let it be socks and heels or layering with collared shirts, do what your heart contents.

Haul: Goodwill's Labor Day 50% Off Sale!

Happy belated Labor Day! Labor Day/Weekend is always full of sales, and being the shopaholic that I am, I like to plan my shopping-day out. Since I'm really busy with school, I allowed myself to shop only in the morning, so I woke up super duper early to get my butt over to Goodwill by 8 AM. Well, "Asian-time" kicked in and I didn't get there until 8:30 AM. When I got there, the parking lot was almost full...my goodness. After some struggling, I found a roomy parking spot and I walked into the store with a mission...that mission would be a good haul. Goodwill, in my book, is an "expensive thrift store." The prices are a bit pricey compared other thrift stores, but Goodwill is a lot closer to my house. With this 50% off sale, the price should be reasonable. Anywho, when I got there, I found out that they weren't able to take debit cards due to some technical difficulties...great, just great. I don't like carrying cash with me, so I had to drive to an ATM machine to grab some moolah. By the time I returned to Goodwill, it was almost 9 AM. Finally, time to work on my so-called "magic."
Personally, my favorite department in any thrift store would have to be the shoes section. My love for shoes is a bit unhealthy, but it's the easiest thing to look for. I wasted about 30 minutes going through the shoes section for about 3 times. No luck. I found a couple of cute things, but they were not my size. Feeling discouraged, I went to the handbag section, which was directly adjacent to the shoes. I never thrifted a handbag/purse before, so I had very low expectations....and all of a sudden, BAM, this cute little purse was peeking out. It caught my attention with its tassels, which I'm currently obsessed with. When I saw the little "Aldo" tag, I sealed the deal, which was only $2.25. Luckily, by the end of the haul, I found a pair of shoes! The line was ridiculously long; it wrapped over to the shoe department, which is in the back of the building. I found this pair of squared-toe oxford heels while I was in line for $2.50.

In addition to the shoes and purse, I found..yet again, a stripe shirt for S2.50! I KNOW. I HAVE WAY TOO MANY OF THOSE, but I bought it with a valid argument. This shirt has a white blocking compared to the tops I already have, which start off with navy instead of white. I'm starting to feel more and more like Louis Tomlinson from One Direction during his "Up All Night" days. <3

So, fall is right around the corner and I should be picking up items for the fall...wrong. I can't help myself; I'm attracted to dresses, because 1) I secretly hate pants and 2) they are so feminine. To address point numbero uno, I'm not a big fan of pants. Yes, they are very flattering, but they are so restricting. You know that feeling when you take off your pants and slip into something more comfortable after a long, long day? Why not feel like that ALL day? That is why I love dresses. Also, I hate hate hate (and hate is a strong word) shopping for pants, esp jeans. I love denim, but I'm so picky with my wash that it makes it difficult for me to find something that I like at the thrift store.

Point numbero dos, dresses are flattering and feminine. Would you believe me if I told you that this dress that I am wearing is a size 11? The things you can do with extra fabric is endless. I paired it up with a skinny belt, and that's how I created the "bubble" effect, which hides my muffin top. I plan on DIY-ing it to make it official. This is just for show for the future. This tulip-patterned dress with a cut-out on the sleeves cost me $3.
This dress is polka-dotted and high-low, and it cost me $3...need I say more?

My least fav item out of the group quickly became my favorite after I paired it up with a high-waisted shorts and some Kenneth Cole Reaction Wedges. This Forever 21 lace top cost me $2, and I can't wait to transition this piece into my fall wardrobe as it reminds me of summer.

My ten cents #25: I learned it the hard way-bring cash to ya thrift stores. Heck, be thankful if your thrift stores take debit/credit card.

082713: Typical Tuesday

I love nothing more than a make-over, so I decided to take the extra step to do so for this blog. Do you notice the difference? As much as I love floral-girly prints, it is time for this to age with class. Plus, it's all organized and user-friendly; I learned how to use HTML just for you guys!
In addition to my new layout, I made a youtube account along with my very first youtube video! I always wanted to get into, I guess, "vlogging (?)," but I'm ridiculously camera-shy. (Did you realized that I tried to omit my face in my earlier posts?) After 8 months of running this thing, I am starting to get more comfortable in my own skin thanks to y'all!
Alrighty, back to the usual stuff: today was nothing more than typical, so I decided to play with the day by being spontaneous and trying new things. I must admit, this blog definitely helped me with my confidence. I always had a different take on fashion compared to the norm, and it's about time I take control over it. I had this faux fur vest in my closet for some time now, way before this blog was created, and not once did I take it out for a spin. I tried, but failed as I wondered what others would think about me. "What is she wearing?" "She is trying way too hard." "Better safe than sorry", I thought as I put it back in the closet.
Today was different. I felt different, a good different. I swear, I felt like a million bucks when I wore the vest...or maybe that's because this is my most expensive outfit up to date.
Kudos to my friend from "An Outfit at a Time" on Youtube for sharing this idea: wear your v-neck backwards! It goes great with a collar shirt underneath.
Oh, say hello to current fave shoes. With the price that I paid for them, they better be my fave shoes. I've been looking for a pair of classy loafers with a pair of tassel, and I could not believe it when I found them in my size!

Elle Faux Fur Vest--Rummage Sale: $5
Forever 21 Polka-Dotted Top--Facebook: $5
Aeropostale V-Neck Long Sleeve Sweater--Garage Sale: $0.25
Mint Pleated Skirt--Ross: $10
Dolce Vita Loafers--TJ Maxx: $35
Ecote Canvas Backpack--Urban Outfitters: $30
Necklace--Hobby Lobby and Michaels: $3
Total: $88.25, Price Per Wear (PPW): ~$20

My ten cents #24: Fashion is a community that shares its good and bad trial-and-errors, so I encourage you to seek inspiration from others. Heck, that's one of the main reasons why I established this blog. With technology being an incredible and power resource nowadays, it doesn't take much to expand your style.

Haul: Forever 21 and Cotton On Monochromatic Additions!

Hola lovelies, it has been awhile since I teased about the Monochromatic Monday's post on my instagram. I was busy studying for a midterm and now that that's out of the way (for now), I am back on the posting grind.
I recently went on a little haul at Forever 21 with their 50% off on clearance sale...I mean, you cannot put the combination of 50% off and clearance together and not expect me there. I believe the double-negative is relevant here to express my excitement! Anywho, after my struggle with the Rainbow Tag, I thought, "Why not flaunt my neutrals that I always rave about." Thanks to my recent haul, I have a couple of additions to my neutral palette.

As teased on my instagram, here's a typical monochromatic outfit that I would put together. You can never go wrong with black and white. Not only are those colors flattering on any body type, but they are so classy. I feel mature and sophisticated without trying too hard. Personally, I am not a huge fan of pants; I would wear dresses 365 days a year if the weather cooperated with me. However, these pants that I recently got at Forever 21 for $8 are a great alternative to my skinny jeans because they are roomy and fitted! I paired them up with a simple black J. Crew crop top that my momma got for me from a rummage sale, which was practically for FREE because it was from those sales where you can stuff a huge bag with anything for about $3. Lastly, to give myself some height, I included my black Charles David wedges that my momma got for about $1 at a garage sale.

To continue my haul post, here is something I came up with on Tuesday: what I wore during the day and what I would have worn during the night if I did not have to study for a midterm..tehee. A girl can dream.

Here we go again, another monochromatic outfit...tada! This time, however, I added various patterns into one outfit, which is usually a no-no, but I think it works. Although each piece is a different pattern, they all have a circular shape, which I am obsessed with recently. I paired my newly bought polka-dotted high-waisted F21 shorts that I got for $6.50 with The Beatles shirt from Kohls that I got for $4. To finish it off, I included my closest essentials: black cardigan from H&M that I got for $10 and black velvet Steve Madden loafers that I got for $2 at a garage sale.

If I didn't have a midterm to study for, then this would have been my "going-out" look. I felt like I was ready to go out to some retro party or something, haha. Finally, I added color to an outfit! However, I wanted the pattern and texture to do the talking. I have been looking high and low for a turtle neck crop top at a price that I am happy with and I was so happy when I found this blue turtle neck crop top with black polka dots at F21 for $2.50! Then, I made my way over to Cotton On Outlet for the very first time and I found this black crochet-textured pencil skirt for $2. I finished the look off with my favorite black oxford heels that I got at Ecothrift for $10.

My ten cents #23: If you don't already, have your essential pieces in black and/or white. They are easy peasy staple pieces that give a nice foundation to any outfit. They are worth the investment, so don't feel bad if you have too many black and white pieces!

#SSP: Introduction

During my first year of college, I took a sociology course where we had discussion once a week and during that time, we discussed our identifications through labels. As much as I don't like the idea of characterizing a person with stereotypical labels, they play a huge part in distinguishing a person among different communities. I am an Asian American female who's trying to live the American dream (whatever that is) while trying to keep some sort of cultural lineage within the new generation. As part of my American dream, education is key for success. A stable major for a stable job is emphasized. Anything beyond that realm was unnecessary, which in my case was art. I was not exposed to art of any kind until high school. Due to graduation requirements, I took a few courses on photography, and as an extra curricular, I joined Asian Club where I perform cultural dances. Unlike many people who are glad to be done with high school, I miss and yearn for the moments where I added new labels to my being. In addition to being "Asian," "nerdy," and "introverted" came "culturally-driven" and "artistic."
Some people may describe art as hip and new, but to me, it is ancient. "New" art is recycled by "old" art, just like how I believe fashion is timeless. It is culturally enriched and it is being forgotten as we speak. With that said, my passion for keeping culture alive has inspired me to join a project with some inspiring individuals in hope to bring back a positive influence into our generation. It's going to be a long journey, but sooner or later, it shall surpass us.
Here's a little glimpse into the future:

This lovely model happens to be one of the forces of the project. She is taking the art of accessorizing to the next level! Why use necklaces, bracelets, and etc. when you have a pair of dancing fans, umbrella, and lantern? She paired each prop with a light pink/almost white flowy dress that she borrowed from her sister...I call that a FREE outfit! Sharing is caring. ;) Oh, and I cannot forget the cute teal Forever 21 wedges for $20.

This beautiful gal happens to be the other force to be reckon with. Not only is she bold enough to jump in a dress, but it is a bright yellow one! If you read my Rainbow Tag post, then you know that I don't own much in yellow. That is because my complexion does not go along with yellow, unlike her's. She bought the bright yellow dress from Wetseal for $15, and she added a black belt above the waist to emphasize the dress's A-line. Curse me and my horrible skills with stop-motion, but just trust me when I tell you that her wedges are way too cute.

I took this opportunity to wear my newly bought blue Rue 21 high-low dress with a criss-cross back, which I got for $10. I paired it up with my black Ninewest wedges that I got at a garage sale for $1. I gotta work on that PPW because it's $10 as of now. :(

My ten cents #22: I don't know what's cooler and hipper than adding culture into your wardrobe. Fashion is an outlet for self-expression, so why not flaunt those labels?

How I Wear It: What the heck is a rainbow tag?!

Tag, you're it! This morning, I guess I was rainbow-tagged (?) by a good friend of mine. I never heard of such thing, so I looked it up and apparently it was the thing a couple of months ago. It's a tag where you pick out your favorite items, let it be garments or make up products, out of the rainbow spectrum. It looked interesting enough, and with this length, it makes up for all the lost time since my last post. I thought it wouldn't be too hard to find my items and quickly shoot some photos, but my goodness, it took awhile. My closet is full of neutrals! After thinking long and hard, I was able to find everything I needed except for the multi-color category...whatever that category is. Regardless, it was kind of fun putting outfits together on the fly because it takes me more than 10 minutes to be satisfied with the results.
RED: This was kind of a toughie because I dislike the color with almost all of my heart. Although it can symbolize love and all that good stuff, I actually think of blood when I see anything red. Not being a fan of blood since it reminds me of needles, I try not to wear it too much. The only exceptions are lipstick and nail polish because those stuff are shimmery. Tehee ;) However, I adore this Forever 21 cutout dress because of the criss-cross design. Oh, and may I add, it was only $10. I paired it up with my new Dooney & Bourke crossbag (as if I don't have enough) that my mother got me for about $7-8 at the flea market and my fav pair of boots from Ross for about $23. Do I look like T-Swizzle yet?
ORANGE: Thank goodness for my Ecote canvas backpack, or else I would not have anything orange to show. I like this shade of orange just because it's almost neutral; it's not bright or vibrant. It's almost like a brown shade, which I dig. I got this as a Christmas gift for myself from Urban Outfitters for about $30; thank goodness for clearance or else I would never afford this. This bag has been through a lot with me and boy, did I beat this thing up bad. It looks like it's about to die, but not on my watch! Gotta work on its PPW! Side note: this is my OOTD, which includes a black H&M cardigan that I got for $10; a grey H&M legging (?) that I got for $10; a floral Ann Taylor top from Ecothrift that cost me $2; a pair of black velvet Steve Madden loafers that cost me $2 at a garage sale; and lastly a lavender H&M infinity scarf from Facebook that cost me $5.
YELLOW: Again, these colors are tough! Yellow, yellow, yellow...I was so tempted to just show my beautiful collection of Forever 21 bags, but I had my "aha" moment when I remembered my yellow Gucci bag that I got as a gift from my aunt. It's like a mustard yellow, which isn't too wild for me. I only bring this baby out to play on special days/events. I paired it up with neutral pieces so it can pop including my Guess LBD that I got at a garage sale for $1 and Nine West heels that I got at another garage sale for $0.50.
GREEN: I don't have anything legitimately green, but I have items that would belong in that family including my mint-colored polka dotted F21 top that I got off of Facebook for $5 and teal F21 canvas shoes that cost me $10.
BLUE: Yes, finally, a color that I did not struggle with. Blue denim, it is! I recently picked up this Gap Denim Jacket for $7 from a rummage sale that I'm head over heels with. It's a bit small, but it's super soft. I think my current favorite pairing is the denim jacket plus red Toms kind of deal. I've always wanted to own a pair of Toms, but my father talked me out of it due to its quality. Luckily, I found a red pair of Toms for $0.50 at a garage sale after my mom talked me into it. :P Lastly, I finished the look with my long time lova, brown replica Coach bag, which I got way back in the day for $2 at a garage sale.
PURPLE/VIOLET: My favorite color! Woot, no struggle here! You cannot go wrong with a button up; it's like a blazer-super sophisticated and chic. I paired this purple Express dress shirt/button up that I got at a garage sale for $0.25-0.50 with a $10 black pencil skirt from Ross. Lastly, I sealed the deal with a pair of black Steve Madden heels that I got a garage sale for $1

My ten cents #21: This is kind of a tip to myself- ADD MORE COLOR TO YOUR WARDROBE. Color can compliment your neutrals and they are so easy to mix and match to make completely different outfits.

073113: Wistful Wednesday (BEST DAY EVA)

This week has been beyond amazing and absolutely nothing can compare to the day I had. Many firsts were done including my first (fake) tattoo, first bart trip, and most importantly, my very first concert. On July 31st, I witnessed the glorious One Direction on the big stage for their "Take Me Home" tour. If you are an avid reader of my blog, then you would know about my "minor" obsession with the hottest boy band eva. If you know me personally, then you would know how long I've been waiting for that day to come. My friend bought the ticket for me way back during April 2012 (?) and she managed to convince me to seize the VIP ticket and boy, am I glad she did. Now, you are probably thinking, "Uhh, cool, you went to see 1D...but where are the weird poses of your outfit?" Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take pictures of my whole outfit on the night of because my memory space was filled with One Direction, but I have a couple of pictures that were taken on my friends' and my phone. As for the 1D details, I'm just going to include them before I forget them when I'm old and married to Liam Payne. This way, I have something to tell our beautiful babies... :P
During 1D's "Up All Night" days, each member had their own distinct look. Liam had this plaid thing going on. Harry wore a lot of blazers. Zayn had his fair share of pictures with his Letterman jacket. Niall wore his classic red polos with khaki chinos. Last but not least, Louis might have been obsessed with stripes and red pants. Being a Liam and Louis type of gal, I sported Liam's face on my forearm, so I thought I can represent Louis and his love for stripe shirts. The addition of Toms was a nice touch that was not expected because I got my hands on them literally the weekend before! It's a little tribute to his red pants and how he's a fan of the brand too:
I guess the boys are ditching the past looks because they kept it relatively simple with neutral tees with minimal wardrobe change. Although they were too cute with their stereotypical looks that they would sometime switch clothes, I kind of prefer their "new" look just because 1) they had more stage time and 2) I focused more on their music and performance rather than their outfits (However, I believe Liam's hat is converting him into a gangsta, but I don't mind :P)

Releasing my inner 1D, especially Harry and Zayn, with my new tatts. Thank you, Alyssa, for the coolest accessory!
This is the only full body shot from that night, just so you have an idea of what I assembled. Excuse my overly excited face; the thought of seeing them during sound check was running through my head.

My ten cents #20: Since this is my first (VIP) concert, I struggled a wee bit with what I should wear. I really wanted to wear a dress because I wanted to look amazing for my boys. I mean, we made eye contact multiple times (or at least I would like to think so). However, looking back at it now, I'm glad that I didn't wear my go-to garment because I definitely jumped and "danced all night to the best song ever."

Haul: Rue 21 Bandeau VS. Bralette

I went on a mini shopping haul yesterday with the intention of buying a couple of bandeaus because I want to diy some crop tops for summer; however, I have never been a big fan of bandeaus with this season's hype. I don't quite understand how you wear it without making it look like you are wearing a bra out in the open, so I only feel comfortable with it used as an alternative to another undergarment. As I was shopping for them at Rue 21 Outlet, I came across another alternative called the bralette. To be honest, I had no idea what that was before some research; it looks like a bandeau with straps. It was only 2 bucks each since it was on clearance, so without hesitation, I gave it a try. I realized why I never liked bandeaus...as you learned before, I am flat-chested, so I don't fit into anything like tube tops well. This bralette thing, however, was more comfortable and cheaper! I guess I just joined the bralette-band wagon.
Yay or nay? I kind of like how edgy and rebellious this look is...pwahaha. Pairing it with a girly lace crop top definitely makes me look like bad-a. Real talk though, what's your thoughts on it? At this point, it seems like it's a necessity in every girl's closet. Is it too scandalous for your cup of tea? Fellas, does this make a girl look...uhh, not classy? I'm honestly curious.
Aeropostale crop top--Aeropostale Outlets: $7
Rue 21 black bralette--Rue 21: $2

My ten cents #19: Although I wish there is a fine line of what is appropriate in respect to fashion, there isn't. When looking at the runways of Fashion Week, that line is beyond blurry. My best advice here would be to wear whatever you feel comfortable with because it's your body at the end of the day; however, don't expect people to feel the same way.
